In order to guarantee our clients the best possible quality, we always apply the latest ISO, EN and DIN standards for translation services and quality management. Kocarek GmbH is always among the first German translation companies to be certified by DEKRA.
In general, the old DIN EN 15038 certification as well as the new ISO 17100 certification specify the requirements imposed on the translation service provider regarding human and technical resources, quality and project management, contractual framework and proceedings of service delivery. A lot of time has been spent on preparing ISO 17100, the standard to be applied worldwide and thus replacing European Standard DIN EN 15038. In May 2015, Beuth Verlag published the final version in English and French, which is available for purchase.
By determining the requirements placed on the procedures during the translation processes, the ISO 17100 standard defines a uniform international standard of quality. It serves as orientation for the customer and as procedural guideline for the translation service provider.
Being the successor of European standard DIN EN 15038, the ISO 17100 certification bridges the worldwide gap in standards. Similarly to the replaced DIN EN 15038, ISO 17100 defines the qualifications of translators and editors, as well as, in addition to these, the qualifications of responsible project managers.
Some of the differences between ISO 17100 and DIN EN 15038 are already well known among companies for specialised translations also certified according to ISO 9001 quality management standard. There are many changes concerning the instruments for continuous improvement already included in ISO 9001 according to which Kocarek GmbH is already certified.
Recording and assessing the project managers’ expertise is one of the basic changes between ISO 17100 and EN 15038. The intention is similar to the one of quality management standard ISO 9001, the translation company’s project managers shall thereby develop the respective skills. This does not only apply to project managers but also to every employee involved in providing the service. They shall regularly maintain and refresh the required skills. Since the adoption of quality management standard ISO 9001, this is common practice at Kocarek GmbH. To achieve compliance with this standard, all employees receive special training to further develop their skills annually. Documented procedures for handling confident information and documented processes for the storage of all material provided by the customer are further requirements of ISO 17100 already covered by complying with ISO 9001.
The new ISO 17100 standard still neither includes the use of machine translation tools, even if a final proofreading is carried out, nor interpretation services.
Being an active member of Qualitätssprachendienste Deutschland e. V. (QSD, the German professional association of translation services), Kocarek GmbH, Essen, already monitored the development of this new quality standard for translation services in its early stages. Hence, in cooperation with DEKRA, Kocarek GmbH also started early with its preparations for upgrading its certification from DIN EN 15038:2006 standard to the international standard ISO 17100:2015. Since 11 August 2015, Kocarek GmbH is accredited to the new ISO 17100 standard.
It is applying both, translation standard plus quality management standard that makes Kocarek GmbH a strong partner for its clients. Quality always takes top priority.
