Without good terminology management, a technical translation is only half as good. This is because terms for machines, materials and components, but also proper names, spare part names and advertising slogans, are regularly created anew. The number of company-specific words is therefore growing continuously. In order to use all of these terms and proper names of the customer’s corporate language accordingly in a consistent manner, Kocarek GmbH makes use of special terminology databases.
Companies often use thousands of technical terms. Technical terms are words, expressions or product names, but can also be advertising slogans and marketing words or phrases, which are very important for a company. The introduction of a unique terminology management system is often associated with companies’ desire to set themselves apart from the competition. If different words are used for one and the same object, however, this can often result in misunderstandings. In addition to incomprehensible texts and rising translation costs, this may even result in the company image being affected. This is because the texts are considered by the customer to be of inferior quality, and this appraisal can affect the overall image of the company. In addition, texts with inconsistent terminology often result in higher demand for support services. There are therefore a number of reasons why the introduction of company-specific terminology makes sense: lower translation costs, consistent use of technical terms, promotion of the company image, and not least the optimisation of support.
A terminology database is a central data store that permits the systematic administration of approved technical terms in the source and target language. This facilitates more productive translation with higher precision and consistency. Terminology management is so important because inadequate management of the terminology can result in the terminology becoming inconsistent, and translations with contradictory definitions being prepared as a result. As a result, the translations cannot be reused, which leads to more work and higher costs. Furthermore, inappropriate use of terminology can provoke customer dissatisfaction. In order to deliver the best possible translation to our customers, our trained translators work with modern translation memory systems, which facilitate optimal terminology management.
Many companies already have a growing number of industry-specific or company-specific technical terms that need to be used and translated correctly. We develop and maintain terminology databases for our customers, and add new entries to these from our technical translations. While the consistent use of terminology is essential for technical documentation such as operating and maintenance instructions, we also ensure that the linguistic style is uniform in other documents.
Upon request, our customers receive online access to the terminology databases. Employees around the world can log into a protected area and look up terms. In addition, images, notes and descriptions can be viewed.
We will be happy to use your existing terminology database in the translation, and to add new terms. If you do not yet have a terminology database, we will help you create a database together. Contact us – we will be happy to advise you!
